But here’s the uncomfortable question: what if the infrastructure they’re building becomes the trap?

When the capex avalanche comes—and it will—the companies with the best orchestration will win. Not the ones with the most GPUs.

The buried: Companies that financed infrastructure assuming exponential demand growth and persistent scarcity. This includes the GPU cloud providers who bet their valuations on continued supply constraints. CoreWeave, Lambda, and similar players built businesses on GPU scarcity that is now easing.

The debt burden is real. $175 billion in new bonds in 2026. $1.5 trillion over five years. That’s not investment—it’s commitment. And commitment requires demand curves that nobody has convincingly modeled.

The survivors: The hyperscalers themselves. They have captive demand. Microsoft has OpenAI, Google has DeepMind, Amazon has Alexa and AWS AI services. They can absorb infrastructure costs through product integration in ways pure cloud players cannot.

The winners: The orchestration layer. The companies building the systems that make commoditized compute and models useful. This includes the MLOps platforms, the agent frameworks, and the data infrastructure that turns abundance into capability.

Strategic Implication

The $700 billion capex avalanche will be remembered as either the foundation of the AI economy or the largest stranded asset creation event in technology history.

The answer depends on what the infrastructure is being built for. If it’s being built for the AI of 2024-2025—massive training runs for ever-larger models—then the investment thesis is already outdated. The industry is moving to inference, orchestration, and agents.

If the infrastructure is being built for the AI of 2027 and beyond—distributed, agentic, and orchestration-heavy—then the investment might make sense. But that requires a different kind of infrastructure than what’s currently being built.

The $1.5 trillion question: When the debt comes due, will the infrastructure still be relevant? Or will the efficiency revolution have rendered it obsolete before the first server is fully depreciated?

The capex avalanche is coming. The only question is who’s standing at the bottom when it hits.
